French Department

French forms an important part of the whole school curriculum and is taught from Year 1.  We want children of all abilities to enjoy their experience of learning a foreign language and to achieve their potential in order to understand and communicate effectively.

Target examinations

Pupils in Year 8 generally sit Common Entrance for entry to their chosen senior school.  This is divided into the four skill areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing.  Some pupils take a scholarship examination, either the Common Academic Scholarship or a paper set by the senior school.  From 2008 there is also the possibility of taking the Certificate of Achievement in Modern Languages, which is appropriate for pupils who have studied a language for a short time only.

French is not assessed at 11+.
