Latin

At Bishopsgate, the children enjoy their Latin studies and embrace the language as a valid and fun 21st Century subject.

As well as achieving great success in Latin at Common Entrance and Scholarship level, the children are taught to understand the value of the language in the modern era.  This is done by helping the children to understand the Latin roots of modern European languages, such as English, French, German, Spanish and, of course, Italian.

Latin is also shown to be a valuable way of understanding how grammar works.  This proves beneficial to pupils of all abilities.  We also have successfully entered groups of children into the annual Guildford Classical Association Latin Reading Competitions.

Alongside language study, the children learn about Roman life, particularly in Pompeii and enjoy learning about the exciting adventures of Greek heroes in mythology.  Trips to the Roman Baths in Bath and Butser Ancient Farm, and a visit to school by Legion XIIII have all helped to enhance the children's appreciation of the Classical World.
