Language in Key Stage 1

‚ΔΆ Speaking and Listening is an integral part of our whole curriculum. Pupils build on skills previously taught, including speaking clearly and using the correct grammar. Opportunities to speak to an audience are provided during Show and Tell presentations as well as in Lower School productions.

‚ΔΆ Reading is also an integral part of our curriculum and pupils read from a wide variety of texts on a daily basis. Each classroom has its own library corners from which pupils can select their own books. A range of reading schemes to develop decoding strategies, knowledge of key words and punctuation are used. Guided reading sessions also take place on a regular basis.

‚ΔΆ Writing: Pupils are taught a range of different genres throughout, in order to develop their understanding of the different structures and language. These include stories, letters, reports, lists, instructions and poems. Work in this area of the curriculum also includes the teaching of grammar, spellings and formal handwriting lessons in order to ensure that our pupils are fully equipped to meet the demands of the next step in their education. Pupils' work is fully celebrated. Work is displayed in classrooms, on the Headmaster's Good Work Board as well as published in book form.
